The Illusion & Delusion of Human Knowledge

When our human brains think that the only chasm between our knowledge and God's knowledge is quantity...we still haven't grasped what "infinite" means. We might be tempted to think that if there was a way for us to somehow travel the billions of trillions of miles in the known universe and to receive the data on all the things in the universe, that when we finally received that last bit of information we would be coming close in knowledge with God...not realizing the chasm would still be at that moment infinite. We, creatures get our knowledge by receiving...by gathering and reflecting upon data...but not so God. Imagine a star 250 light years from earth. The reason why God knows everything there is to know about that star, its name, size, temperature, energy output, and every subatomic particle in it, isn't simply because God is omnipresent and is therefore able to receive data and do experiments on that star. God's knowing and speaking actually make that star.

God's knowing and speaking actually make that star.

God created that star, designed everything in it and sustains it moment by moment by His great power. God's knowing, and speaking of what He knows makes, not merely one star, but the universe itself and all it contains. That is a form of knowledge that humans will never grasp.

Philosopher, Cornelius Van Til calls this the Creator/creature distinction and we must never forget it. God will always be the Creator and His thoughts and Words make reality what they are. The opening few words in the Bible are extremely important! “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” God’s Words create worlds and all they contain. God’s Words move and govern history. God’s Word can bring sight from blindness and death from life! As creatures, our knowledge and use of words is always in response to what God created. We didn’t create ourselves and can’t help but reacting (even when we think we are self-made and are being oh so original) to the atmosphere and environment that our Creator has placed us in.

When by faith we humble ourselves and begin to try and think God’s thoughts after Him, begin to trust God as He has revealed Himself in His Word, and begin to do what our Creator commands, then our lives begin to align themselves with our Creator’s will.

This doesn’t mean life will suddenly become easier or more comfortable in the short-run because in a fallen and rebellious world that has turned against its Creator, beginning to follower God’s will can actually make day to day living more difficult when surrounded by a world that refuses to follow the music of its Maker.

In our Post-modern culture we have been told that we creatures actually have Creator powers! Our interpretative powers will make reality what it is. Eternity will smash this lie and will forever throw it into the darkness. God alone is Creator. His Word alone makes reality what it is.

The Creator will not be mocked though. He is patient, gentle and kind. His goodness towards His rebellious creatures is designed to show us that He is merciful and willing to forgive all who come to Him, by trusting in His Son Jesus Christ. God’s goodness is designed to lead us rebels to turn from our sinful rebellion and turn to Him and the better life His has planned for us now and for eternity.

If a rebellious creature continually, and habitually spurns God’s Word of repentance towards mercy, they will find themselves with only one other option. They will have to face their Creator’s Word of justice on the Day of Judgment.

Instead of trusting their Creator to gracious pay their sin debt they will insist that for all eternity they will pay for it themselves.

For those who trust God and His Word, eternity will demonstrate itself to be an ever increasing world of love, goodness, truth and joy. For those who want nothing to do with God will be given exactly what they want and will be eternally disappointed with their choice.
